Stellenbosch Cycle Tour 2019: Entries Open Tomorrow

A fabulous cycle tour around some of South Africa’s most exquisite Winelands, the Medihelp Stellenbosch Cycle Tour is the second-largest road cycling event in the Western Cape and a premier seeding event for the Cape Town Cycle Tour, previously called the Cape Argus.

In 2019, riders can expect a new start and finish line at one of South Africa’s most luxurious lifestyle estates – Val de Vie, and while the 102km route remains largely unchanged from recent years, it has been swapped around a little so that the most challenging climb of Helshoogte Pass (Hell’s Heights), which previously came at the beginning of the race, has now been moved towards the end.

With 1285m elevation spread over 102km, the Stellenbosch Cycle Tour is not the most challenging sportive in the cycling calendar, particularly if you have done some training in the alpine regions of Europe, but there are strict cut-off times in place, and you need to be finished by 12:30.  While the start time is yet to be confirmed, the event is expected to start at 07:00am as in previous years, and so you have a good 5 and half hours to make your way around – and still take a moment to enjoy the view.

Taking place exactly 7 weeks before the iconic Cape Town Cycle Tour 2019, the timing of the Stellenbosch Cycle Tour is perhaps not ideal for international entrants, but if there was ever a good excuse to head on down to Cape Town early and train in the glorious sunshine that is all but guaranteed in January and February, this is most certainly it!

The Equatours Team will be taking part in the Stellenbosch Cycle Tour 2019 for the very first time, can we tempt you to join us?
