What with the Cape Town Cycle Tour and the Cape Epic, March is a busy time of the year for cycling events in Cape Town, but if you didn’t manage to secure an entry for either of the aforementioned races, there is one other cycling event that you are most welcome to enter, but the question is, do you dare to bare?!
The 8th World Naked Bike Ride is set to take place in Cape Town on Saturday 11th March 2017, and if you are passionate about the environment, this is most definitely the ride for you! Designed to raise awareness about cutting carbon emissions, promoting cleaner energy, and making South Africa’s Mother City a safer place to cycle, this ‘clothing optional’ cycle tour attracts quite a crowd each year, and this year you have the opportunity to be one of them!
The World Naked Bike Ride starts and finishes at the Sea Point Library, and while the event organisers point out that the ride is “not about nudity”, participants are encouraged to ride “Bare as you Dare”! Some take it very seriously and ride in nothing more than their birthday suit (apart from their cycling helmet of course, which is obligatory in SA!), others wear bikinis, you’ll spot more than the odd Mankini, and a few riders opt for fancy dress.
If you are thinking about entering, here’s a few shots from an earlier ride… but if you’re easily offended, don’t look down!!
